Alex Selby studied mathematics at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, completing his PhD in pure mathematics in 1993. His academic career continued with lecturing in the United States and with fellowships at New Hall, Cambridge. Since then he has worked on a range of projects, achieving public notoriety in 2000 as a joint winner of the £1m prize for solving the ‘Eternity’ puzzle, inventing some new tree-searching algorithms along the way.

Mark Owen studied mathematics and engineering at the University of Cambridge, completing his PhD in pattern recognition in 1992. He worked in industry and as a consultant in signal processing and allied fields, collecting a number of patents in the process, and finds a little time to work as a freelance translator. His book, ‘Practical Signal Processing’, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007 and is available from all good bookshops.
