Download this image with or without overlay

Instructions

Drag the image around with the mouse or use the long-range scan in the bottom right-hand corner. Double-click to zoom in, or use the buttons to the right. Check and uncheck the ‘Overlay’ box to see the text in the image and our results.

The greener the background to the overlay text, the more confident the system is in its answer.

Commentary

Even though almost all of the word ‘CIGARETTES’ is obscured, the systems manages to find it and read it correctly. This is an example where naïve thresholding of the image is unsatisfactory as a preprocessing stage: the text can only be read if the preprocessing does not destroy essential information in the original image.
